Muse Headband

EEG band powers, meditation calm scores, and fNIRS oxygenation from Muse S

Overview

Omnio streams directly from Muse S (and compatible Muse headbands) over Bluetooth LE — no Muse app cloud round-trip required. Captures delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma band powers in both relative and absolute form, plus fNIRS hemoglobin oxygenation (HbO/HbR), and computes a per-session calm score for meditation and focus tracking.

How the integration works

The Muse headband exposes its raw sensor data over Bluetooth LE on a well-known GATT service (MUSE_SERVICE_UUID), and Omnio's mobile app speaks that protocol directly. No Muse cloud account is required and no subscription gates the signals. The app subscribes to the EEG characteristics, decodes 12-bit samples, converts them to microvolts, and runs band-power estimation for delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma in both relative and absolute (log10 μV²) form on the device. It also decodes the PPG and accelerometer/gyroscope streams, and — on Muse S Athena — the fNIRS channels for prefrontal HbO and HbR. An onboard artifact-rejection autoencoder masks motion and muscle contamination before band powers are written, so sessions with heavy jaw clench or movement don't silently inflate your calm score.

What Omnio adds on top of Muse Headband

The Muse app gamifies meditation with a calm score and birdsong feedback, and keeps the raw EEG trapped inside its own cloud. Omnio treats those signals as first-class biometric data and correlates them against the rest of your profile: pre-versus-post session HRV delta tells you whether a session actually moved the autonomic needle, theta-to-beta ratios across weeks ranked against training load reveal whether overtraining is starting to affect focus, and alpha peak frequency trends show cognitive aging signals that no meditation app surfaces. Because the data lives in your Omnio database rather than Interaxon's cloud, you can export it, query it from the AI chat assistant, and feed it into sleep and readiness scoring. For users who meditate seriously — or who run quantified-self experiments — Muse plus Omnio turns a consumer headband into a research-grade EEG logger without ever touching desktop software.

Metrics We Sync

  • Delta, theta, alpha, beta & gamma relative powers
  • Delta, theta, alpha, beta & gamma absolute powers (log10 μV²)
  • Calm score per meditation session
  • fNIRS HbO & HbR (oxy/deoxy hemoglobin)
  • Session duration & consistency
  • Aperiodic (1/f) EEG components
  • Alpha peak frequency
  • Per-quadrant band powers (frontal left/right)

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Muse devices are supported?
Omnio supports Muse S, Muse S Athena, and Muse 2 via direct Bluetooth LE connection. Muse S Athena's fNIRS channels (HbO/HbR) are captured if available. The original Muse (2014) isn't supported because it uses an older BLE protocol.
Does Omnio replace the Muse app?
No — keep the Muse app for firmware updates and guided meditations. Omnio streams raw EEG data directly from the headband in parallel so you can track band powers and calm scores alongside sleep, HRV, and training data that the Muse app doesn't see.
What is the calm score?
A 0–100 score derived from the alpha/beta ratio and session stability, calibrated against your personal baseline. It correlates with subjective meditation quality and improves over weeks of practice.
What are fNIRS metrics?
Muse S Athena includes functional near-infrared spectroscopy sensors that measure prefrontal cortex blood oxygenation (HbO) and deoxygenation (HbR). These are proxies for prefrontal cortex activity during focus and meditation tasks.
Can I correlate Muse sessions with sleep or HRV?
Yes — that's the main reason to use Muse with Omnio. See how meditation consistency affects overnight HRV, resting heart rate, and deep sleep, or whether evening sessions improve sleep onset latency.
Do I need a Muse subscription?
No. Omnio connects directly to the headband via BLE so you don't need Muse Premium. The Muse app subscription unlocks guided content but doesn't gate the raw sensor data.
